This year, we had decided to do a road trip through Michigan and Wisconsin. Unfortunately, due to scheduling problems, we couldn’t get a group together.

So I decided to ride take a different route on a solo road trip instead.

I planned a route along Michigan’s Lake Huron coast. Over 3 days, I rode over 1000 miles and loved every minute of it.

On the first day of the trip, I traveled up Route 23 from Toledo to Alpena.

Along the way, I stopped at a few roadside parks and climbed the tower of the Tawas Point Lighthouse. The view from next to the lens was unbelievable.

From the lighthouse park, I rode the local Big Boy for lunch. He kept eyein’ my bike.

It’s always interesting to see different regional displays as you ride along the country side. These concrete statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe are in the town of Ossineke.

With the amount of coastline that the state claims, it stands to reason that Michigan have an inordinate number of lighthouses. So every time I saw a sign for a lighthouse or lighthouse park, I tried to find it. This lighthouse was at Sturgeon Point.

After nearly 8 1/2 hours of travel and sightseeing, I arrived at my hotel of choice for motorcycle trips, the Best Western of Alpena. Best Western is great when traveling by bike. They have a Ride Rewards program and many “Rider Friendly” hotels. Plus, they have aways treated me well.
